His life is recounted in the Epic Sunjata to this day. His successors, Mansa Wali and Mansa Musa continued expanding the territory of the empire. In 1312 Mansa Musa made Islam the official religion of the empire. 12 years later he undertook his famous pilgrimage to Mecca with an enormous retinue of servants, bodyguards and courtiers, along with copious sums of gold that he distributed generously. The return journey, however, is troubled, many of his party are killed, and Mansa Musa was obliged to borrow funds for their return. Nonetheless, he returned from the pilgrimage with poets and scholars, beginning a massive building program, particularly of mosques and madrasas. Timbuktu and Gao became celebrated centers of learning. In the 15th century, the empire was pressed by the Tuareg, Songhai, and Mossi. By the end of the century, Djenne and Timbuktu had successfully asserted their independence. These and other neighboring states chipped away at the empire.
