Using natural passive cooling strategies for climate mitigation, harvesting over two million litres of water in a drought-prone region, recycling waste water through natural plant (reed-bed) processes, bio-gas generation and composting - all are key components of this project, an institute set up to increase knowledge of rural, low-cost sanitation solutions. The campus is built essentially with natural materials and integrates local crafts skills such as stone inlay and mosaic work. The ventilated two-leaf cavity walls are constructed from load-bearing bricks, with the outer face left exposed, for cost and aesthetic reasons.
