SOS Children's Village Dakar
Dakar, Senegal
The compound comprises: a kindergarten, ten houses containing the children's dormitories, and administrative facilities. The compound is organised around a traditional meeting place marked by a Baobab tree. The kindergarten, with its high pyramidal roof, is the dominant volume. Its roof structure rests on four cubic classrooms which open onto a large central space. Each classroom has access to a private yard. The ten, single-level houses, each accommodating eight - nine children and a foster mother, are set amidst lawns and gardens. A series of playgrounds, easily accessible from the houses, were created from volcanic rocks unearthed during construction.
