Bibliothèque de Proximité
Algiers, Algeria

Unabashedly modern - Mondrian’s abstractions feature on the facades- this library insists on including Algeria in the continuing dialogue on modernity and universalism in architecture, a dialogue it engaged in most enthusiastically during the 1950s. The structure of five levels, conceived by the architect as Cubist in aesthetic, is designed as two cubes: a transparent one residing within a solid cube. The library is nestled among the hillside buildings of the Telemly neighbourhood that includes a mix of both apartment and free-standing dwellings. Situated on a slope, it has entrances on both upper and lower levels that lead to reading rooms and play areas.
