SRDU: Capacity Building for Rural Housing
Gubrie, Ethiopia
Two Sustainable Rural Dwelling Unit prototypes have been built to date, one with a square (90 m²) and the other with a circular (140 m²) footprint. They are the result of an initiative to learn from the vernacular architecture of the Guraghe people. Both are made of mud-straw blocks in a two-storey vaulted roof configuration supported by an archetypal umbrella-like structure. The houses are topped with bamboo roofing, and the windows are of woven bamboo. In an area where livestock are often sheltered by the same roof as the inhabitants, these units are significant in their separation of spaces, and their integration of systems.
