Primary Healthcare Centre
Dharmapuri, India
Built to a tight budget financed by small private donations, the structure is based on a ‘building within a building’ concept. An inner core obeying high specifications for weathertightness, security, hygiene and maintenance contains the elements central to the brief: reception, two consultation rooms, laboratory, pharmacy and toilets. A lightweight surrounding layer, of less costly construction, comprises waiting and circulation spaces and ancillary functions. The outer ‘skin’ offers protection from fierce summer heat. Raw and industrial processed elements are juxtaposed, echoing current local building practice. Thatch screens and rubble masonry in the outer facades anchor the building visually within its environment.
