Korogwe Research Laboratory
Korogwe, Tanzania
This square-shaped building in a courtyard scheme is designed to accommodate a clinical laboratory for malaria research in rural Tanzania. An orange grove features in the centre, surrounded by colonnades connecting the various offices, clinics, and related activities. While the medical functions demand full air-conditioning and water systems, frequent failures in the provider networks necessitate back-ups and the reduction in reliance on those networks. Consequently, the building is oriented and naturally ventilated to reduce cooling costs. Similarly, rainwater is filtered through sand and captured in an underwater cistern. Constructed of concrete with cement-sand blocks, plastered and painted with a focus on the contemporary, the laboratory aims to demonstrate that that no-nonsense design can be aesthetically pleasing.
