School Extension
Gando, Burkina Faso

This addition to a rural school seeks to demonstrate, once again, that local materials and labour combined with simple innovations can produce sustainable development. The original school, an Aga Khan Award recipient, soon exceeded its capacity of 120 pupils, and consequently, the architects and the community came together to expand the facilities for a school population that had swelled to 200, and to create a library. Built of clay brick stabilised with 8% industrial cement in load-bearing walls, each structure is protected from damaging rains with a stone foundation and a double roof. A ventilated, vaulted ceiling topped with a tin roof on a steel structure provides protection from the elements and natural cooling.
