Skateistan
Kabul, Afghanistan
This two-storey building has been erected on the grounds of the Afghan National Olympic Committee to provide recreational and educational opportunities for Afghan youth aged 5 through 17 and particularly for street children. The structure, a continuous arched steel panel building constructed with K-span technology, houses the skate facility as well as a climbing wall, classrooms, and related functions. It provides a safe and secure location for both boys and girls, and accommodates over 400 youth on a weekly basis. Skateistan takes a functional building type most often associated with military installations and puts it to effective use for this youth-oriented facility.
