Guabuliga Orphanage
Goabuluga, Ghana

The project comprised the building of two new compounds and the refurbishment of another. The site plan and the orientation of individual structures facilitate ventilation and shading. Walls are built of compressed earth blocks produced on site, set on raised concrete slabs to prevent water damage. Protected surfaces are plastered with mud in the local manner; exposed ones are cement-covered to survive rainy seasons. As in traditional Mamprusi architecture, there are almost no windows; instead, wooden louvre doors regulate light and airflow. Electricity, including that for the pumping system installed to remobilise an inactive borehole, is provided through solar energy. The orphans themselves assisted regional experts and local labourers in the construction.
