Inkwenkwezi Secondary School
Cape Town, South Africa
This school, on the edge of a township, combines three layers of undulating classrooms organised around a central courtyard that facilitates staff’s task of getting pupils into classes. Its subdivision through seats, alcoves and level changes allows all children to find their own social space. Windows are screened from direct sunlight, those onto the courtyard being set high to avoid distraction. The hall is designed for flexibility and, along with some classrooms, generates income through rental to local community groups. The school’s painted name and the coloured bands that articulate wall surfaces copy the methods used to transform local houses into shops. Rainwater is collected from the roof for irrigation.
