Bibi Heybet Mosque
Baku, Azerbaijan

Originally built in the 10th century as a mausoleum one of the Prophet Muhammad’s descendants, the mosque on this site was completely destroyed by the Bolsheviks in the 1930s. Its recent rebuilding follows the Shirvani form and style of its predecessor. The exterior is limestone, while Ural marble is used extensively within. All the rich decoration was executed by hand. Taking account of Baku’s harsh winters, under-floor heating was installed, and a heated underground prayer room accommodating 2,000 people added. Further additions include a mortuary for up to 20 bodies, and rooms for sheep sacrificing, with climate control and special sanitary arrangements.
