Soekarno Memorial Space
Provinsi Jawa Timur, Indonesia
The original architectural programme for a library was altered when the client was convinced to utilize the area’s main tourist attraction, the cemetery where President Soekarno was interred. In the resulting ‘memorial space’, the entryway is through the library, along a processional path that proceeds past public art and water features to the cemetery. In this way the library benefits from and enhances visits to the tomb. Cultural activities are further promoted by the provision of an amphitheatre on site. The library’s stone-clad, two storey structure finds inspiration, in its horizontality, geometric symmetry, stacked massing and volumetric hierarchy, in the nearby, flat-roofed Penataran Temple from the Kadiri Empire.
