Salihara Arts Complex
Jakarta, Indonesia
This cultural complex in a residential neighborhood consists of a gallery, a theatre and offices housed in separate structures, each of which was designed by one of the three architects who collaborated on the site plan. The gallery was placed to the front to invite passers-by, the theatre to the rear for privacy and the offices on a narrow strip to buffer adjoining properties. Connecting paths, gardens and terraces were also created as gathering spaces for visitors and artists. Landscaping and an open-design, breathable building technology have resulted in energy-efficiency where neither air-conditioning nor lighting are required during daylight hours. All surfaces were finished in plastered cement and concrete for uniformity.
