University Institute for International Relations
Maputo, Mozambique
Located in an expanding suburb and built with severe budgetary constraints, this campus is conceived as a micro-urban environment. All elements are arranged around a large courtyard, opening onto it to facilitate connectivity. This open space also provides respite from study and tempers the microclimate thanks to its grove of coconut trees. Generous shaded external walkways are designed to encourage intellectual exchange and cross ventilation throughout the complex minimises the need for air conditioning. The reinforced concrete structure and light steel roof were specified to suit locally available materials and construction skills.
