Chandrashila Budget House
Kottayam, India
The aim of this project in a remote village in southern India was to provide a low-budget, eco-friendly, three-bedroom house using local materials. The design evolved on site in response to a number of existing elements: a worker’s shed inspired the building typology; a traditional ‘kayyala’ or village compound wall of rubble and mud prompted the technique; and a rock formation was blasted to provide the raw material for the outside walls. The crater left by the rock was converted into a pond to harvest rainwater, and bio-technology tanks process solid waste, producing enough gas to fuel all the cooking in the house.
