Phuket Gateway
Phuket, Thailand
The gateway marks the entrance to the province and stands as a visitor attraction in its own right. A series of pavilions, linked along the curve of the site, contain facilities including shops, a restaurant and information centre. Bamboo walls and unglazed tiles express both Southern Thai vernacular and sustainable building, and rain is allowed to flow down the walls of the central meeting room. A sculptural colonnade conceals the pavilions and echoes local Sino-Portuguese colonial tradition. Each column carries an information panel relating Phuket’s history, culminating in a taller column clad in individual granite tiles to express the diversity of cultures that makes Phuket unique.
