Ancient Mediterranean Museum
Copenhagen, Denmark
Set in the catacomb-like rooms of Hack Kampmann’s nineteenth-century extension, the exhibition features around 1600 objects. Based on new research, the display focuses on the interaction and integration of ancient cultures around the Mediterranean by considering thematic and chronological relationships. A coherent palette of materials, including glass, stainless steel, sand-blasted acrylic and black basalt, has been applied throughout, providing a contrasting but neutral background for the stone, bronze, wood and clay objects. The emphasis is on lightness and transparency, with no distracting frames on the display cabinets, and new up-lights and stainless-steel sunshades banishing the gloom of the old museum.
