Public Service Complex
Marsa Alam, Egypt
This government-funded development was a pilot intervention project to kick-start the sustainable development of rural villages by enabling communities to help themselves. Core to its values is the revival of traditional building techniques and the use of locally available materials. The complex comprises three zones: a recreation area with drinking fountain, water tanks and ablution wall; an animal slaughter plaza facing Mecca; and a toilet block. Additionally shops and a communications centre with phone and internet were introduced to the brief. The use of traditional dome and vault construction reinforces the community's cultural identity as well as moderating the climate and reviving old skills.
