Steel Prototype 1
Kuching, Malaysia
With the local government trying to rebuild run-down rural schools, this prototype was developed with a local steel products supplier as a versatile building that can be constructed with standard off-the-shelf components in remote sites without the need for skilled labour. The single-storey structure is raised on concrete stumps to accommodate undulating terrain and facilitate installation of service pipes. All the steel connections are bolted to allow easy dismantling, and the parts can be transported by long boat or truck along jungle roads. Adaptable to various sizes and configurations, the prototype has many possible uses, from classroom to relief housing.
