This is a medieval city, strongly influenced by architecture from the Ottoman era. In recent years, it fell into decline as both residents and commercial enterprises moved out. The revitalisation project includes a master plan, renovation of the municipal market (the heart of the historic town and focal point of commercial activities), and the upgrading of the city's narrow streets. The project has seen the rejuvenation of economic and social life within the Walled City. There are new bars, restaurants, cultural festivals and concerts that attract a regular flow of visitors to the area.
