The architect proposed a master plan of four buildings based on traditional Islamic geometries to create an urban gateway around the central boulevard of Putrajaya. Then, in designing this ministry, he split the tower from its podium to create an internal ‘street’ that draws people from the boulevard. This is bridged by open routes, literally making the corridors of government transparent, and echoing the traditional vernacular of open verandahs. The environmental strategy is another design driver, with timber screens and aluminium brise soleils to the west facades of podium and tower designed to mitigate solar gain.
