Buildings in Cyclone Prone Area
Noakhali, Bangladesh
This project is as much about process as product, inspiring trust to enable communities to help themselves. At the heart of the initiative is the rejection of a proto-typical house for disaster-prone areas in favour of ‘Building for Safety Options’ to be applied to existing house typologies. The process began with in-depth studies of settlement patterns, construction techniques and materials and the establishment of community relationships. One demonstration house was designed and built by the consultants and community and afterwards five variations and two schools were constructed by the community alone.
