Anoumabo Open Theatre
Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire
On the water's edge between two of the city's principal bridges, the 3,500 seat open air theatre is part of a cultural complex that includes a concert hall, a theatre and rehearsal hall. A cooperative project between the governments of the Ivory Coast and China, the open air theatre is constructed of reinforced concrete (the stage, amphitheatre and posts holding the steel superstructure of the roof) with a steel-frame roof structure and a textile covering. The design of the theatre is sensitive to its dramatic backdrop of water and the skyline of Abidjan. It demonstrates an awareness of its role in the urban landscape as a highly visible landmark.
