Post-Tsunami Village Reconstruction
Banda Aceh, Indonesia
This project saw a group of concerned construction professionals working with a community to involve and enable them in rebuilding their village. Nine months of preconstruction assistance mobilised the villagers in mapping their land, agreeing housing clusters and eligible benefactors, assessing design alternatives and ultimately formulating a new Village Plan. The first building was appropriately the community centre, followed by 150 housing units, three barracks, a secondary dike and infrastructure. These were all undertaken by the construction committee that again comprised local people, including some women for the first time. The community is not only more independent, it now recognises consensus as the means to resolve problems.
