Warwick Junction Project
Durban, South Africa

This project exemplifies the successful collaboration of local authority and stakeholders in creating an urban-scale intervention that benefits all. Brook Street Central is the site of informal trading and of the shrine to Badsha Peer. Extended veneration ceremonies at the shrine were disrupting trading activity and vice versa. The worshipper’s society proposed a permanent roof as an alternative to the temporary marquees that had previously been erected to accommodate 10,000 devotees. This has led to a seven phase development, fully roofing the street and providing new servicing and access. The covered market now stands as a ‘doorstep’ to the previously segregated inner city.
