Emek Yezreel College Library
Emek Yezreel, Israel
The design of this new wing for a university library does not attempt to resemble the existing structure, but rather 'differentiates itself architecturally as a tool for unity'. Unity, here, refers to the fact that the university's 6'700-strong student population is composed almost equally of Arabs (Muslims and Christians) and Jews. The main reading hall is articulated by a cladding of limestone, while the rest of the volume is glazed. The structure is made of poured in place concrete columns and beams and pretensioned, precast concrete slabs.
