Tetaring Kayumanis Restaurant
Nusa Dua, Indonesia
In Bali a 'tetaring' is a temporary bamboo structure used for festive events. Its typology is adapted here to a new function, as a contemporary restaurant, by combining local bamboo and clay with global materials such as steel, glass, acrylic, polycarbonate and granite. The restaurant's floating partitions and 'flying ceiling' are made of some 15'000 stems of bamboo, joined by pins rather than the traditional rope. The larger aim of the project is to 'bring bamboo into modern architecture' by promoting new ways of applying a material that offers an ecologically sound alternative to timber in construction.
