Vatan Memorial
Sogratl', Russian Federation
The Vatan Memorial commemorates a battle in 1741 when the united forces of Dagestan overcame foreign invaders. It establishes a direct link between present and past through its cladding - locally quarried natural stone, turned by hand as it would have been 300 years ago. It is made up of two structures. The first is a memorial mosque. The second is a medieval-style battlement formed of two intersecting towers that serve as a museum. The towers symbolise the 'hardness and courage' of the soldiers. Both structures are tied together by a system of terraces, parapets and a viewing platform.
