Ksar of Taghit Rehabilitation
Taghit, Algeria

The restoration of the fortified village ('ksar') of Taghit is not limited to the repair of the mud-brick structures. The objective, beyond this, is to generate new economic opportunities and greater social cohesion. Initiatives include training young people (boys in construction skills, girls in the more lucrative types of weaving), setting up exchanges with French universities and other foreign institutions, and creating a travelling exhibition to publicise the project. The physical restoration work has so far been focused on the mosque, a group of 15 houses and a well.
