Tarim is at the crossroads of abandoning traditional mud-brick construction in favour of imported Gulf tastes executed in concrete, a material that is totally unsuitable for the local climate. The intention of this project is to stimulate economic development through historic preservation. The town has around 50 eclectic mud-brick mansions. A documentation-training programme has focused attention on their significance, while the most important structure has been restored and given new life as a house museum complete with an exhibition space, boys' club and women's centre. To date, the total repaired area is 804 m2.
