Jnane Housing
Marrakech, Morocco
This project inserts a human-scale housing development inspired by 'local heritage' into one of the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods of Marrakech. It provides 59 housing units averaging 120 m2, in a mix of two-storey single-family homes and three-storey apartment buildings. The focus of the complex is a square with a fountain, the 'symbol of water in our traditional spaces'. The 'symbol of the sun' is to be found in a mural by an artist. The reinforced concrete structures are infilled with concrete blocks and covered with a variety of finishes - sandstone, concrete tiles and traditional Moroccan tilework ('zilege').
