Future Hope Village
Kolkata, India
Future Hope, a charity that cares for abandoned children in Kolkata, constructed this pilot village scheme as a way of continuing support for children who have finished their education and are entering the world of work. The 75-hectare site provides 17 small self-contained units, available at a minimal rent. The one- and two-storey buildings are placed informally around a small garden containing an 'adda khana', or traditional chatting area. Built of brick, they are designed to be easy to maintain and to sit comfortably alongside the vernacular houses in the neighbouring village of Nachne Para.
