Built in one of the poorest countries in the world, the renovation of the Old Boma was a project undertaken by a UK-registered charity in an effort to create sustainable employment for the coastal town of Mikindani. A century-old colonial building was rebuilt using local expertise and labour, and adapted as a hotel, and education/training center. The structure's walls are made of coral stone and finished in lime plaster, and the roof is corrugated iron set on top of wooden joists. Room layouts were redesigned and new plumbing and electrical systems installed.
