Al-Fustat Ceramics Center
Cairo, Egypt
A project designed for the study of the traditional crafts of pottery and ceramics. The building is 2,400 square metres and consists of workshops, lecture areas, dormitories, exhibition galleries, glazing rooms, offices, a multi-purpose hall, and guest rooms for artists, all of which are centered around a series of open air courtyards. Indigenous materials were used with the exception of reinforced concrete. The centre has become an important teaching institution as well as a catalyst for the revitalisation of the surrounding area - a long-forgotten district of old Cairo.
