The Aga Khan University provides post-graduate training of health service professionals, teachers and managers of schools, and the development of research scholars. It was granted its charter in 1983 as Pakistan's first private, autonomous university.
Originally located on 64 acres donated by the Government of Pakistan, the Aga Khan University was conceived in 1970 to improve healthcare delivery and medical education throughout Pakistan. While the complex incorporates state-of-the-art educational and medical technologies, it also demonstrates that a modern architectural solution should preserve the spirit of its culture. The initial campus, an integrated complex of buildings and landscaped courtyards completed in 1985, provided approximately one million square feet of space for hospital, academic and housing functions. Payette has designed numerous additions and expansions during the past 25 years since the campus opened. Today, this campus of 84 acres is the hub of an integrated health delivery network that delivers care to one million patients annually in Pakistan and the surrounding region.
