Todar Mal (c. 1515 - 1589) was a Khattri, originating in Avadh (Oude), and is believed to have served Sher Shah Sur (1538 - 1545). In 1562 he entered Akbar's service as a revenue officer. Fatehpur Sikri was once filled with mansions, gardens, pavilions, stables and caravansaries. Of all these buildings, only this baradari, or summer house, survives in recognizable shape. It lays between Tehra Darwaza and the Gwaliar Gate, an octagonal pavilion of similar design to the royal pleasure pavilion at the northwestern end of the wall.
