This building replaces structurally unsafe houses on a confined site where two 8-member families were living. The rammed-earth structure is ideal for developing countries - simple to execute and using only natural, locally available materials. Since one family wanted more privacy for their full-width rear garden, the two units are ranged one behind the other, instead of side by side to the street as before. Each house has two bedrooms, bathroom, living room, kitchen, private entrance and roof access, via which the rear house is reached. A shared central court provides light and ventilation to both units. This has been temporarily roofed to accommodate one family’s grandmother, but will be reopened when a planned roof extension for her is completed.
