The Heydar Aliyev airport spans an area of 58,000m2 and is expected to serve over six million passengers a year. The scope of the project included all the interior architecture of the terminal, covering all the passenger areas. Taking inspiration from the warm hospitality of Azerbaijan, the architects used custom-made wooden "cocoons" that break up the large volume of the terminal, creating a sense of welcome and discovery. These forms vary in size and house an array of amenities within; they are built with a steel profile and Ayous timber structure with oak veneered birch plywood cladding. The furnishings are made of tactile natural materials such as wood, stone, and textiles, and spaces are gently and warmly lit, upending the usual airport typologies.
