Dar-Bayrem Rehabilitation
Tunis, Tunisia

The last 18th century urban palace in the Médina of Tunis has been rehabilitated and re-used as a boutique hotel of 17 rooms (6 grand historic suites and 11 traditional suites). Sections needing demolition were replaced with similar materials and traditional artisanal techniques were employed. The purchase of a ruined neighbouring mansion allowed the installation of services (hammam, meeting rooms, tearoom, restaurant, etc.) unable to be included in the main building. Thus the public was allowed a view of society’s prestigious past with its refined craftsmanship and harmonious way of life. Authentic French Art Deco and Orientalist furniture, carpets and kilims from Iran and Turkey were introduced, and leading-edge technologies for air-conditioning and heating, communications and security were installed.
