Shahporan Mosque & Islamic Centre

A new Mosque was developed from an integration of a refurbished mosque with a neighbouring listed building in a heritage area of East London. The building, a former workshop, was stripped back and strengthened, whilst retaining its original features. The façade of the existing mosque is derived from a 13th century Anatolian design abstracted to form the full height of the building. A metal mesh is placed over the rest of the façade in the style of mashrabiyya screens. The pattern for the screen is taken from the Woking mosque, the first in Britain. This is the only completed local mosque in the country that actively sets out to reinterpret Islamic architecture in a contemporary way.
