Balaguina Primary School
Balaguina, Mali

The project is located in the Dogon region and is propelled by the belief that development is encouraged through education. The existing school, a poorly constructed hangar, has been replaced by a school building, teacher accommodation and sanitation facilities. The school building is constructed of compressed earth with verandas to each side acting as buttresses. Built of brick laid in alternating blocks, the ribs determine the rhythm of the facade. The teachers’ accommodation is composed of four adjacent barrel vaults. Each structure comprises a courtyard, living room and bedroom. Ventilation pipes in the roofs eliminate the need for a double roof. More building phases are to follow.
