Sbeitla
Subaytilah, Tunisia
The Roman city of Sufetula (present-day Sbeitla) was founded in the 2nd century CE. The city was an agricultural center and the remains of olive presses in the city suggest that this industry brought the city to prosperity and wealth. The city was also maintained in the Byzantine period and was the place of entry for the Muslim armies who invaded Ifrīqiya in 647 CE where they defeated the army of Gregory the Patrician (d. 647), the Byzantine exarch of Africa, who also died in battle. The city possesses an array of impressive Roman and Byzantine buildings and monuments of which many are still intact.
