Qahwaji Residence Restoration
Damascus, Syria
An early 19th century house situated east of the Great Mosque in Old Damascus, the Qahwaji residence presents a windowless façade with a door opening on a corridor leading to an inner courtyard paved with coloured stone with a rose-stone pond in the center. The restoration work used traditional methods, and consisted of:

- reinforcement of the surrounding walls;
- rebuilding the north, east, and west sides of the upper floor, including the ruined walls, the roofs and some of the ground floor ceilings;
- fixing the damaged roof tiles on the south side;
- designing a new pavement for the yard re-using the original stones;
- designing new wooden doors and window following the old design;
- creating new sanitary services on the upper floor and maintaining the old plumbing;
- providing a central heating system;
- re-wiring and installing electrical fittings; and
- restoration of the decoration details and ornaments.
