Gezira (al-Jazirah) is one of the states and regions of Sudan. In this document Fathy elaborates on the importance of the cotton industry in this area and gives an analysis of the economical, cultural, and social aspects of this region. Furthermore, he outlines the role of the architect in the development of this region by aiming to alleviate the declining economic situations of rural areas through ekistical planning. Fathy offers directives aimed at designing rural areas with the lifestyle of the villager and farmer in mind as well as keeping in mind that architectural designs should be compatible the social and cultural factors of the region. He offers some additional considerations from the Gourna project.
