In this paper, Fathy discusses the various causes of air pollution in the urban environment and the several attempts, through trial and error, to find a solution for this problem. Fathy emphasizes that the most viable and urgent solution for Arab cities can only be obtained through scientific methodology and research on architectural design and the other various factors related to it. He specifies the traditional components of design for the Arab house, and in particular its courtyard design, and how this can be beneficial to counter pollution within the modern city. He also details the concepts of design for the traditional Arab city and high rise buildings of the Arab world while discussing their relation to the problem of air pollution.
