Hassan Fathy - In this paper, Fathy calls for a harmonious approach for the planning and development of the New Village of Gourna in Egypt. He suggests to consider the social, economical, and cultural factors of the village residents during planning. He also discusses the effects of poverty in rural construction and development while stressing for the absolute need for rural populations to utilize local material in building. He also discusses the importance of architectural planning for village housing while keeping in mind the ways that future inhabitants' will utilize the structures and the village. This would include hygiene methods, laundry facilities, cooking and utensil storage, heating, livestock domestication,  public buildings, and the sense of creating an environment which the villagers can call home.
