Minaret al-'Adil
Meskene, Syria
The Minaret al-'Adil is one of the few architectural remains that still stand in old Meskene today. Meskene is an ancient site on the main east-west trade route across Syria. Though the settlement once overlooked the Euphrates River, since the creation of Lake Asad in the late 1970s Meskene has been a lakeside site with some parts approaching the manmade body of water. The thirteenth century Ayyubid brick structure has a stark simple form that suggests Persian architectural influence that arrived from the northern part of the country. The minaret has recently been restored with its interior staircase leading the interloper to views of the new lake and Meskene.
