Tata Medical Centre, Cancer Hospital
Kolkata, India
The facility sets a benchmark in exemplary cancer care, treating patients across all economic strata. Care, research and academic buildings are interlinked within a ‘hospital in a garden’. Special attention has been paid to the provision of hospice and paediatric facilities. A central courtyard enables interaction between users. Families of patients can be accommodated in spacious waiting areas. Buildings are orientated to capture prevailing winds, and recessed openings reduce glare, bringing light and extending views. External stonework penetrates the interior complementing warm timber finishes and artwork. A wall system inspired by a ‘jali’ screen protects the south and west facades.
