Bayannur High School
Bayannur, China

It was only through the introduction of a new model of high-school design that these issues of budgets, climatic conditions and limited local building technologies could be addressed. The designs respect the low-cost and low-technology restraints, and create a series of five multi-storey cruciform structures to maximise light and air. These are connected by walkways, as well as an esplanade at ground level. Inward-looking, they turn their backs to the harsh elements - sandstorms and cold winters - while providing sheltered spaces for the students and teachers in a new paradigm.
